Methodology · FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27)
This estimates tax for a resident individual for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27). It is preparation help, not a filed return.
- Standard deduction (section 16(ia)), only if you turn on salary or pension income: ₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old regime. If the toggle is off, standard deduction is ₹0.
- New regime uses the Finance Act 2025 slabs (nil up to ₹4,00,000, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% above ₹24,00,000). Age does not change these slabs.
- Old regime basic exemption depends on age: ₹2,50,000 below 60, ₹3,00,000 for ages 60–79, and ₹5,00,000 for 80+. Rates above that stay 5% (where a 5% band exists), 20% up to ₹10,00,000, then 30%.
- Section 87A, new regime: if taxable income is up to ₹12,00,000, tax is rebated up to ₹60,000. Just above that limit, marginal relief keeps tax from jumping by more than the income over ₹12,00,000.
- Section 87A, old regime: if taxable income is up to ₹5,00,000, tax is rebated up to ₹12,500.
- Surcharge on tax after the rebate: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore, and 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime. The new regime stays at 25% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief limits tax plus surcharge to the tax at the threshold (with the lower surcharge) plus the income above that threshold.
- Health and education cess is 4% of tax after rebate plus surcharge.
- Old-regime caps used here: 80C ₹1,50,000, 80CCD(1B) ₹50,000, 80D ₹25,000 (₹50,000 from age 60, self and family only), section 24(b) self-occupied interest ₹2,00,000. Other Chapter VI-A is whatever you type. The new regime ignores these amounts.
Resident-individual estimate for FY 2025-26: slabs, salary/pension standard deduction, capped 80C, 80CCD(1B), 80D, and self-occupied section 24 inputs, section 87A with new-regime marginal relief, surcharge with marginal relief, and 4% cess. Not included: capital-gains special rates, non-residents, firms and companies, employer NPS under 80CCD(2), multiple employers, and return filing. Not tax advice. Human legal sign-off is still pending.

What the income-tax comparison covers
The page estimates tax for a resident individual for FY 2025-26 (assessment year 2026-27). You can compare the old regime, which can use deductions such as section 80C, with the new regime, which drops most of those deductions and can be nil up to the section 87A rebate limit. Both paths include the standard deduction where it applies, surcharge with marginal relief, and 4% health and education cess.
It does not apply special rates on capital gains, non-resident status, firm or company tax, or employer NPS under section 80CCD(2). It does not file a return.
How to use it
- Enter income under the heads the form shows. Do not put business turnover here; use the ITR-4 helper for presumptive income.
- Add old-regime deductions only on the old-regime side. The new regime will ignore them.
- Compare the two totals, including cess, rather than the slab line alone.
- Check the year on incometax.gov.in before you choose a regime or file. This is an estimate, not tax advice.
