Guides, tips & FAQ

What is EMI?

EMI — Equated Monthly Installment is a fixed monthly payment that covers interest and principal on a reducing-balance loan. Early installments are interest-heavy; later ones repay more principal.

Estimate monthly EMI, total interest, and total repayment for a home, car, or personal loan. Uses the standard reducing-balance formula. Not a loan offer — verify with your lender.

Reducing-balance formula

EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1)

P = principal, r = monthly rate (annual% ÷ 12 ÷ 100), n = tenure in months. If r = 0, EMI = P ÷ n.

How to use this calculator
  1. Loan amount: Enter or slide to the principal you plan to borrow (shown in Indian ₹ formatting).
  2. Interest rate: Annual percentage rate (p.a.) offered by the lender.
  3. Tenure: Toggle years or months, then set the loan term. Results update live — monthly EMI, total interest, total payment, and the principal vs interest breakup.
  4. Year-wise table: Expand the repayment schedule accordion for principal, interest, and closing balance by year.
Worked example
  • Loan = ₹10,00,000 at 10% p.a for 60 months.
  • Monthly rate r = 0.10 / 12 ≈ 0.008333.
  • Plug into the EMI formula (illustrative).

EMI ≈ ₹21,247 / month (rounded)

What this does not include
  • Processing fees, insurance, GST on fees, or prepayment charges
  • Floating-rate resets or step-up EMI schedules
  • Tax benefits or amortization schedule export
