Guides, tips & FAQ

What is chronological age?

Chronological age is the calendar time elapsed since birth, usually reported in completed years plus remaining months and days. Forms, exams, and eligibility rules often need this exact breakdown—not just the year difference.

How we calculate age

Age = (years, months, days) between birth date and reference date

We subtract calendar components, borrowing months/days when needed (same approach used for civil age). Total days is the whole-day difference between the two local calendar dates. Feb 29 birthdays in non-leap years use Feb 28 for “next birthday”.

Worked example
  • Birth date: 15 August 1990. Reference date: 24 September 2026.
  • Completed years: 36 (birthday already passed in 2026).
  • Remaining span from 15 Aug 2026 to 24 Sep 2026 is 1 month and 9 days.
  • Result: 36 years, 1 month, 9 days.
Common uses
  • School, exam, or sports age cut-offs as of a fixed date
  • Passport, visa, and KYC forms that ask age in Y/M/D
  • Insurance or benefit eligibility windows
  • Personal milestones and anniversary planning
Method & limitations
  • Uses your device’s local calendar dates (not UTC midnight), so the day you pick matches what you see.
  • Does not apply legal “age as of midnight in jurisdiction X” rules—check the form’s instructions when eligibility is strict.
  • Leap years affect total days and month lengths; see the glossary for leap-year basics, or use the date calculator for day counts between any two dates.
  • Not medical, legal, or government advice—results are for convenience and planning.
