The problem
UPSC, SSC, state PSC, and university portals each publish different maximum photo sizes. UPSC allows a larger JPEG range than SSC’s tighter cap. Using the wrong target wastes time — compressing to 100 KB when the form allows only 50 KB still gets rejected.
Step-by-step
- Find the exact KB range in your application notification (do not guess from a previous year’s form).
- For caps near 20 KB — common on strict exam portals — use Reduce Image to 20KB.
- For caps near 50 KB — common on SSC and many state recruitment forms — use Reduce Image to 50KB.
- For caps near 100 KB or when 50 KB looks too blurry — use Reduce Image to 100KB.
- Download the file, check its size in your file manager, then upload. Re-compress if the portal shows a size error.
Common mistakes
- Choosing 20 KB when the notification allows 50 KB — unnecessary quality loss.
- Renaming the file but not re-exporting JPEG (some portals read actual encoded size, not filename).
- Compressing a screenshot of a document instead of a proper portrait photo.
- Submitting without checking whether the portal requires JPG/JPEG specifically.
